On Geek Parenting - call for panelists
November 25, 2008
I’m co-convening the Linux Chix miniconf at Linux.conf.au (LCA) in Hobart in January. I’ll be able to post the lineup of speakers for the day soon, but in the meantime an overview of the day can be found here. But one of the cool things we’re planning is a panel session on Geek Parenting, which will be open to all LCA attendees.
We are now looking for some experienced geek parents as well as an expert or two (educator, counsellor or other professional who is experienced in matters parental) who would like to share some ideas, tips and discussion on the challenges that being a parent can present.
Read on for details including how to nominate yourself for a spot on the panel.
The LinuxChix miniconf is pleased to announce that we’ll be hosting a panel on Geek Parenting at LCA this year. We are now looking for some experienced geek parents as well as an expert or two (educator, counsellor or other professional who is experienced in matters parental) who would like to share some ideas, tips and discussion on the challenges that being a parent can present.
There are lots of questions you might have as a geek parent – or a parent of a potential geek.
How do you deal with having a gifted child who is having trouble socialising at school? How do you make sure that your child doesn’t ’switch off’ from learning during those terrible teen years? Are there any ways to get your kids to think science and tech are cool rather than the daggy stuff mum or dad does at the computer all day?
If you would like to be part of this discussion, please put your name forward as a potential panellist. The panel will be held on January 19 as part of the LinuxChix miniconf.
Men and women are both encouraged to participate.
Please email: miniconf-submission@au.

Got something to say?

[...] I’ve just posted the details of an event we’re planning for Linux.conf.au (LCA) 2009 which I’m pretty excited about - a community panel on Geek Parenting. We are looking for some experienced geek parents as well as an expert or two (educator, counsellor or other professional who is experienced in matters parental) who would like to share some ideas, tips and discussion on the challenges that being a parent can present. Read the full details over at my other blog, The Open Source Report. [...]
Do you get a confirmation of submission when you email. haven’t received any word back from submission.
Hi Gabriel,
There isn’t an automatic confirmation when you make a submission, but we will be getting in touch with people as soon as we’ve had a chance to discuss them.
Sorry for the lag, but we will get to it as soon as we can.
Cheers,
